ENTERTAINMENT Like/Dislike: KayJay, DJ

December 26, 2012
DJ KayJay was always interested in DJing, even before the rise of party-starters such as Calvin Harris and Deadmau5, whose songs have overtaken the club scene. The Baltimore-based DJ, otherwise known as Kristin Jackson, likes to please the crowd with her versatile play style, which ranges from commercial house to rock. After six years in the business, 28-year-old Jackson says what she does is more than just a hobby. "DJing is my full time job," the Bel Air resident says. "I have been lucky enough to have the opportunities available to turn this into a career.

FEATURES Songs that pump up Baltimore's mayor for Ravens Super Bowl win

By Jill Rosen and The Baltimore Sun | January 30, 2013
The mayor can rock out. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake shared her Spotify playlist this week -- the songs that ostensibly get her pumped up before big Ravens games. She goes with M&T Bank stadium standbys like The White Stripes "Seven Nation Army. " There's Ray Lewis' walk-on song "Hot in Herre" by Nelly. And she tells Spotify her "personal favorite" is "This is How We Do It" by Montell Jordan. We like that she picked "Run This Town. " Which, you know, she kinda does.

EXPLORE Catonsville makes the scene on band's CD

By Mary K. Tilghman | January 2, 2013
Catonsville is among a number of Baltimore locales featured in songs on a new CD that will be released Saturday at a special performance party at the Creative Alliance in Highlandtown. Dan Naiman, a Catonsville resident for more than 20 years, plays bass for the Stone Hill All-Stars that will perform material from the "The Stone Hill All-Stars Live!" CD during the Jan. 5 event. The band, made up of Baltimore-area residents, recorded the music during an Aug. 4 concert at An Die Musik, a downtown performance space on Charles Street.

ENTERTAINMENT 'Rolling Papers' Week, Day 4: How to make very unnatural Wiz Khalifa songs

By Wesley Case | March 31, 2011
It’s Rolling Papers Week at Louder Now. Wiz Khalifa, hip-hop’s young pothead-in-charge, dropped his highly anticipated major-label debut Tuesday. Every day this week, I’m going to analyze the tracks: what works, what doesn’t and what it means for a rap star clearly interested in crossing over to mainstream success. 9. “No Sleep” (Produced by Benny Blanco and Noel “Detail” Fischer) Who’s to blame for this monstrosity? Is it Benny Blanco, the 23-year-old Dr. Luke understudy who co-penned Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok”?

FEATURES 'Diner' Broadway debut pushed back to fall

By Chris Kaltenbach and The Baltimore Sun | January 8, 2013
When it comes to bringing his "Diner" to Broadway, Barry Levinson is feeling a serious sense of deja vu. As detailed in a recent New York Times article, "Diner" is among a number of shows that have had their projected openings pushed back, thanks to a combination of economic skittishness and (at least in the case of "Diner") scheduling problems stemming from the tumult caused by Superstorm Sandy. While the show's producers had hoped for an April opening, fall 2013 is appearing more likely.

NEWS Columbia music historian compiles Vietnam War songs

By Janene Holzberg, Special to The Baltimore Sun | January 14, 2012
Nearly 40 years ago, a haunting photograph of a naked Vietnamese girl running in anguish after being severely burned in a napalm bomb attack on her village became an iconic image of the Vietnam War. But most who have seen the Pulitzer Prize-winning shot probably haven't heard the obscure song it inspired more than three decades later, says Hugo Keesing, a self-taught music historian. "The Girl in the Picture (Napalm Girl)," released by Yanah in 2004, is one of more than 300 famous and not-so-famous songs and spoken-word tracks about the war that are included in a 13-CD anthology assembled by Keesing, a Columbia resident.

ENTERTAINMENT Ray Lewis tribute song a hit on Mix 106.5

By Wesley Case, The Baltimore Sun | January 9, 2013
Spend some time listening to Mix 106.5 recently and you'll likely hear an unshakable Bruno Mars hook, Taylor Swift's surprising dubstep leanings and even Britney Spears' voice on a will.i.am song. But in a twist that could only happen in a football-crazed city like Baltimore, you will likely also hear motivational soundbites from Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis' laid over a Phil Collins classic. While Ravens fans probably don't need more hype or motivation going into Saturday's playoff game in Denver, the mash-up (using Collins' "In the Air Tonight")

ENTERTAINMENT Hey Karmin, stop covering rap songs

By Wesley Case | April 13, 2011
Here's an example of what the world needs less of: twee, novelty covers of rap songs by cutesy indie duos. Not only does Karmin's "cover" suck the vibrant life out of Chris Brown's "Look At Me Now," but it does so with a knowing, smary attitude. (Amy Heidmann's strange vocal inflections and bug-eyed emphasis scream, "This is funny! I shouldn't be singing this but look ... I am!") This cover offers nothing new other than a Starbucks-ready version of a song that should never be played at Starbucks.

ENTERTAINMENT Double the 'Purple Reign': Los and Mullyman rap for the Ravens

By Wesley Case, The Baltimore Sun | January 25, 2013
(Above photo is from Los' Facebook page ) Los and Mullyman , two Baltimore rappers who have seen success outside of the city, have pledged their allegiance to their hometown's football team. This week, they've released separate songs in support of the Ravens. Both are titled "Purple Reign," but sound very different. (Note: The Sun's Jill Rosen spoke with Los and the song's producer, J. Oliver, and has a story about the origin of "Purple Reign. ") With its regal horns and stadium-sized hand claps, Los' "Purple Reign" sounds ready for the radio right now. It also invokes the underdog attitude the team wears so well.

NEWS Timeless lessons of Christmas songs

By John E. McIntyre and The Baltimore Sun | December 24, 2012
Waiting at Patient First this morning for my bronchitis to be diagnosed, I was trapped in an examining room listening to Christmas music. There was also a small child in a nearby room screaming in pain and panic, and that helped me to understand what Mary and Joseph must have thought about that kid with his damn drum.* Withal, I arrived at a fresh understanding of the importance of this music. That "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" prefigures the surveillance state has long been understood, but I had not had much occasion to reflect on the lyrics to "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

NEWS In Gaza, songs of anguish

November 21, 2012
I am a singer and a rabbi, and I would rather sing to you right now, because you have probably read too many words, heard too much raw speech, about Israel and Gaza. It would be better to soothe and distract. But I feel compelled to find words. Just words. Biblical verses and fragments of songs jostle for recognition and repetition, but I can't hear then clearly enough. Instead, I'm trapped in the compulsion to read every report, go to every website. It feels disrespectful to say that I feel inundated or bombarded by all the words, when there are too many who are actually being bombarded.

ENTERTAINMENT Rocker Chris Tomlin brings Burning Lights tour to Baltimore

By Colleen Jaskot, The Baltimore Sun | February 22, 2013
Of all the cities Chris Tomlin plays, Baltimore is one of his favorites. "I don't know what it is, but it seems like there's nights where you feel really connected to the people immediately," Tomlin said. "There's other nights where you have to work at it. At Baltimore, you never have to work at it. " Tomlin, 40, is returning to Baltimore on Friday, to perform at 1st Mariner Arena . It's the third stop of his Burning Lights tour, promoting the album of the same name that topped the Billboard 200 chart - only the fourth Christian rock album to do so. "It's pretty crazy," Tomlin said.

ENTERTAINMENT Orioles 2011 entrance songs

By Erik Maza, The Baltimore Sun | April 3, 2011
All ballplayers have one. Mark McGwire had "Welcome to the Jungle," Chipper Jones famously uses "Crazy Train" and Mariano Rivera still enters Yankee Stadium to Metallica's "Enter Sandman. " Entrance songs can be mellow, combative, sometimes inspiring. During those 10 seconds when batters are walking to home the plate or pitchers are making the minute-long stroll to the mound, this is the song that'll blast from the speakers to motivate and pump them up. At Monday's home opener, the Orioles will be announced to a fanfare of hip-hop, country, even Scandinavian house music.

ENTERTAINMENT Essential Dan Deacon songs

By Baltimore Sun reporter | February 18, 2010
Dan Deacon makes music for children and inner children alike. Equal parts earnest and eccentric, Deacon's songs range from explosive celebrations to ambient noise. Here are five essential Deacon songs, from the bizarre to the brilliant. 1. "Wham City" from the album "Spiderman of the Rings" A nearly 12-minute ode to the collective of experimental artists and musicians, of which Deacon is a key member, "Wham City" is Deacon's opus. Fittingly, a gang of Wham City folks sing together on the song -- a triumphant, experimental epic.

NEWS Songs about 'boobs'? No wonder people don't watch the Oscars

February 27, 2013
I watched Sunday's Oscars hoping that this year they would be better. I have heard that viewers are decreasing yearly. It is no mystery why. The Oscars are supposed to be the entertainment industry's highest award, yet we are continually exposed to juvenile humor that would be more appropriate in a bar (if that). My prime example is the opening number in which host Seth MacFarlane sang about whose "boobs" have been seen in movies. As the Mr. MacFarlane pointed out, the show was being watched around the world by 1 billion people, and this is the best we can do?

NEWS One last dance for the Recher Theatre in Towson

By Jill Rosen, The Baltimore Sun | March 31, 2013
Deep in the cellar beneath the Recher Theatre , Buddy Hilsberg curates a museum of sorts. He's got boxes filled with the silly rider demands of every band that's headlined the Towson club. He's saved pieces of wall signed by everyone from Paul Reed Smith to the English Beat to Dick Dale. He's even got the autographs of bus drivers who brought all these musicians to play. "It's history to me," said the silver-haired manager who's been with the York Road concert hall since it opened 17 years ago. And it's history for everyone else now, too, as the Recher, one of Maryland's smallest but best known live music venues, held its last concert Sunday.

ENTERTAINMENT 'The Walking Dead' season finale recap, episode 316: 'Welcome to the Tombs'

y Andrew Conrad, aconrad@tribune.com | March 31, 2013
Well, we wanted carnage in the season finale of The Walking Dead , and we got it. I have a feeling most viewers will consider this episode tame, though, since the Governor is still kicking and the war between the prison and Woodbury still hasn't quite been resolved. We'll just have to wait until season four to find out how this story ends! AMC has us eating out of its hands... When you think about it though, this episode was pretty strong. There was an actual skirmish between the prison and Woodbury, the Governor lost his mind and killed off almost all of his troops, two major human characters died (and a boatload of insignificant ones)

Songwriting

Find the Best Songwriting Techniques

The best way is to constantly and persistently study what hit songwriters do. You couldn't be a starting quarterback in the NFL without spending years studying the greats who came before you. The same is true for writing songs and songwriters. They learned their song writing craft from the great writers who came before them.

Learning How to Write a Song

Study song craft and work on your song writing every day. Listen to current chart-toppers and take notes on what those hit songs have in common. Don't write songs that could have been hits when you were twenty-one. Analyze songs that appeal to today's audience.
What is their song structure like? Which chord structures work best? Does the song have a bridge? How many bars are in the intro? Do their lyrics tell a story, or are they more abstract?

How to Sell Your Songs

If you're trying to get your songs cut by major label artists, then read the articles below to find out who their managers, producers and A&R people are and learn how to get their contact information so you can systematically contact them and ask for permission to submit your music.
If you're trying to get film and TV placements for your songs, then you'll need to watch a lot of TV and movie credits and look for the names of music supervisors and music editors. Licensing your music for film, TV, and video games won't make you rock star wealthy, but you can build it up over a period of a few years. If you treat it like a full-time job, you'll be able to amass the contacts, build more music industry relationships, begin pitching your songs, and eventually replace your day job doing something you love.
